The School Engagement Programme (SEP) is In2MedSchool’s Newest Initiative

This free programme aims to deliver information about healthcare professionals, primarily focusing on the career of a doctor and the journey to medical school, through in-person visits to schools across the UK to speak with students through the ages of 12 to 18 years old.

These visits will allow us to provide students and staff with previously inaccessible resources and guidance about the complicated medical application process, allowing us to level the playing field, whilst also increasing awareness about how the activities of In2MedSchool’s other divisions can support these students.

All of our visits are delivered by a team of medical students and doctors, and each visit is organised by our team of SEP Coordinators who volunteer their time to liaise with local schools, deliver these in-person visits, and support the next generation of medical professionals.

Our Work

We focus on delivering in-person visits to schools across the UK to speak with both students and staff about a career as a doctor and the pathway to medical school.

Last academic year, during our unofficial pilot year, we were able to visit 30 schools in-person with a very small team, and we aim to continue that work through our new programme. These in-person visits take the format of presentations, workshops, careers fairs, and informal Q&A sessions, and are delivered by a team of medical students and doctors. These sessions aim to support aim to support school students who are interested in a healthcare career, specifically focusing on medicine, or those who may not yet have considered a career in medicine, by providing key information, insight and resources to both students and staff.

We hope that these sessions will help to make the medical application process as transparent as possible

whilst explaining how In2MedSchool can help.

Presentations

Our presentations are our most popular type of school visit. During these sessions, we can target a specific age range of students and deliver the key information and advice that they need at their stage. Our “Applying to Medicine” presentation is our most commonly delivered presentation, relevant for students between the stages of S4/Year 11 and S5/Year 13 as it gives a complete overview of each stage in the medical application process.

As with all our school visits, we always provide students with the opportunity to ask our volunteers questions; many of whom choose to stay behind after session to ask these questions directly.

Workshops

Our workshops bring an interactive aspect to our visits, allowing students gain some insight into the healthcare sector by working on a small task or activity during the session.

For example, our “Radiology – Spot the Difference” game allows us to explore the role of a radiologist and the use of imaging in medicine through an interactive activity where students face the challenge of finding the pathology in an abnormal image by identifying which area is different from a normal image.

We have a variety of different interactive segments which are targeted towards different age groups and allow us to explore different healthcare professions. During these sessions, we will also provide key information about how to pursue different healthcare professions, as well as the opportunity for students to ask our volunteers questions.

Informal Q&As

Our informal Q&A sessions are simplistic in nature but allow students to tailor the discussion towards their current information needs. Whether about the UCAT or interviews, entry requirements or work experience, students will have the opportunity to guide the discussion and obtain the answers that they need.
This type of session is most often utilised for students who are set on applying to medicine, for example, S6/Year 13 students who are looking for some final input and advice for their medical application. We do, however, incorporate a Q&A aspect into all of our visits and our volunteers are more than happy to remain behind after the session to answer questions from students directly.

Career Fairs

Our volunteers are well-versed at representing In2MedSchool at school-organised careers fairs. Our volunteers bring along resources to decorate their stall with and free leaflets, pens and stickers to hand out to attendees.

For example, our “UCAS Medical School Application Timeline” and “Scottish University Entry Requirements” leaflets are up-to-date resources that have been specifically designed by our team for aspiring medics and supportive parties.
These events are an opportunity for students, and parents, to speak directly to our medical student and doctor volunteers about their individual circumstances and gain invaluable information and advice.
