In2MedSchool is United Kingdom's Leading Widening Participation Initiative
In2MedSchool is an award-winning, registered charity. Our community of volunteers work with students, schools and communities to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds apply to study Medicine and healthcare-related degrees at university.
We provide free support through:
1-to-1 mentorship from a UK medical student or doctor;
Online and in-person events related to medical school applications, lifestyle medicine, and medical career options;
School visits introducing younger students to healthcare careers;
Resources related to the medical school application process;
Work experience opportunities through our collaborations with hospitals,
GP surgeries and nursing homes.
In2MedSchool: How It All Began
In2MedSchool began in the summer of 2020 as a simple but powerful idea: to make medicine more accessible to students from disadvantaged and widening participation backgrounds. It was sparked by a LinkedIn post from our Founder, Dr Brian Wang, which quickly gained momentum and led to over 100 medical students and junior doctors across the UK volunteering within weeks.
Throughout that summer, Brian worked independently to connect schools, mentors, and prospective mentees. During this early period, Co-Founder Dr Gabriela Barzyk joined the initiative after signing up as a mentor herself. When approached about supporting mentees in her area, she immediately offered to help scale the growing project at a time when demand had rapidly outpaced capacity.
Working together, they identified the power of digital outreach and social media for recruitment. A single campaign targeting Warwick medical students resulted in 80 new mentor sign-ups overnight, marking a turning point in the organisation’s growth. From this point forward, regional student leaders were introduced across the UK, and the initiative expanded rapidly - from just over 100 volunteers at the start of September 2020 to more than 1,500 by the end of the month.
Under Gabriela’s leadership at Warwick Medical School, the first structured mentor cohort was established. As Regional Heads were recruited across universities nationwide, the organisation began to take formal shape, adopting the name In2MedSchool and laying the foundations for a sustainable national programme. Early growth and impact were recognised with the Most Sustainable Project Award at the National Widening Participation Conference in 2020.
As the organisation matured, Regional Heads progressed into Officer roles and later Directors when In2MedSchool became a registered charity in the UK in February 2022, and later in Scotland in November 2023. This transition marked a shift from grassroots initiative to structured national charity, with dedicated teams developing programmes, resources, and opportunities for both mentors and mentees.
Today, In2MedSchool supports more than 4,000 mentees and 5,000 volunteers across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. As the organisation continues to grow, our mission remains the same: to drive meaningful change for widening participation students and make medicine more accessible to all.

Our Core Mission
Support widening participation students in accessing medicine and healthcare careers, regardless of background or circumstance.
To achieve this, In2MedSchool delivers a wide range of interconnected programmes designed to provide both practical support and long-term opportunity.
These include free 1-to-1 mentorship, alongside a growing library of academic resources to guide students through every stage of the medical school application process.
We also provide access to work experience opportunities, national webinars, events, and school outreach visits to ensure students can engage with medicine early and meaningfully.

Acceleration Programme
Our Acceleration Programme offers structured coaching and lifestyle-based support to help students build confidence, resilience, and readiness for medical training.
We also share grants, discounts, and external opportunities to reduce financial barriers wherever possible.

Over the past six years, In2MedSchool has also grown through a strong network of partners, sponsors, and collaborators who share our mission. Organisations such as the Tom Donaldson Charitable Trust, Medify, UnLtd, and collaborators including Wilfrid’s House have played an important role in enabling us to expand our reach and deliver impactful programmes nationwide.
In 2026, In2MedSchool was honoured to be selected by The Armitage Foundation as a recipient of its generous legacy gift as it closes its chapter. We are incredibly proud to continue its legacy and carry forward its commitment to widening participation in medicine.
